Why are there Teflon and Kynar are such high priced plastics
Within the last year, the market has experienced more shortages than I have seen within my 30 years experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have observed several shortages, and delivery delays as a result of material allocations coming from resin suppliers. This is definitely the very first occasion I have seen all these issues at the same time.
Polytetraflouroethylene (TFE) and Kynar both are on allocation.
The two of these resins are in short supply. The PTFE Sheet product PTFE (TFE) and also Kynar-PVDF manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar that is mined in Mongolia and China. The world interest in this mineral has risen significantly, as well as supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high heat resistance, excellent chemical resistance and very low co-efficient of friction (slick) and is utilized throughout tons of applications from non-stick fry cookware to ptfe tape for home use. This mineral is actually a critical raw material inside the production of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and many refrigerants. This increase in demand mixed with shortage of raw materials is responsible for a dramatic price increase (almost double throughout the last year), shortages, and we expect these two factors to keep at it in the near future.
