72 Hours in Magical Madrid

Enjoy the latest blob by the Avid Traveller:

In the fall of 2024, a fast 72-hour trip to Madrid with good friends seemed like the perfect excuse to look into the city's rich heritage. Our hotel, positioned in the heart of the city on Cal base to find Madrid's renowned landmarks and savour its gastronomic delights. As we wandered through the city's vibrant plazas, we soaked up the infectious energy and historical significance that surrounded us.

Our group's varied choices led to numerous activities. Suzanne and Richard started the very firstday one evening with a remarkable supper at Bodega de los Secretos, a comfortable, centuries-old dining establishment full of appeal. On day two my partner and I joined a tapas and wine walking tour led by the enthusiastic Mario. We went to numerous local hotspots, including a mushroom specialty bar and an Iberian delicatessen, while discovering Madrid's history and culture.

Day 3 was all about cooking, with Pamela and Bill setting up a paella masterclass at the luxurious Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez directed us through the intricacies of making conventional Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was paired with tastings of local sherries and white wines, making it one of the journey's highlights.

We rounded off the weekend with a see to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate place showcased the raw feeling and appeal of flamenco dancing, providing an ideal cultural capstone.

Throughout the journey, we delighted in memorable meals at local dining establishments like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we delighted in genuine Spanish meals such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the famous calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, providing a glimpse into Spain's abundant cooking customs.
